Hydraulic Shearing Machine Pressure Calculation
Calculating the required pressure for a hydraulic shearing machine is crucial for selecting the right equipment. The pressure depends on material type, thickness, and shear length, as well as the material's shear strength.
Pressure Calculation Formula
Required Pressure (kN) = Shear Strength (N/mm²) × Material Thickness (mm) × Shear Length (mm) / 1000
Where:
- Shear Strength is the material's resistance to shearing forces
- Material Thickness is the thickness of the material being cut
- Shear Length is the total length of the cut in millimeters

Common Materials and Shear Strengths
| Material Type | Shear Strength (N/mm²) | Typical Thickness Range (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| Mild Steel | 310 - 380 | 0.5 - 60 |
| Stainless Steel (304) | 480 - 520 | 0.5 - 30 |
| Aluminum Alloys | 90 - 150 | 0.3 - 50 |
| Copper | 180 - 220 | 0.3 - 40 |
| Brass | 230 - 270 | 0.3 - 30 |
| High Strength Steel | 650 - 730 | 2 - 50 |
Standard Shear Lengths
Common shear lengths for hydraulic shearing machines:
- Benchtop Machines: 600mm - 1200mm (24" - 48")
- Standard Industrial: 1200mm - 3200mm (48" - 126")
- Large Format: 3200mm - 6000mm (126" - 236")
- Custom Industrial: 6000mm+ (236"+) - Special order
Note: The required pressure increases proportionally with longer shear lengths. Always select a machine with pressure capacity exceeding your maximum calculated requirement by 10-15% for safety and performance.
